This masterclass examined the wider social and economic factors that contribute to poor public health.
Dr Rob Noonan demonstrated how current public health challenges such as health inequity, obesity, physical inactivity and poor mental health are the result of structural factors and offered illustrative examples of how these can influence population health – for better and worse.
Referring to his recent publication, Capitalism, Health and Wellbeing, in which he outlines how the drive for economic growth is at odds with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals to achieve a better and more sustainable future.
Dr Noonan explains that if the ‘health for all’ goal is to be achieved, it is imperative to redesign the economic system and social progress metrics that promote productivity and consumption at the expense of health and wellbeing.
