The Masterclass brought together leaders from across health, care and local government to explore how the public sector can confidently and responsibly move towards AI‑enabled ways of working.
Dr Surbhi Gupta, Regulatory Lead and Advisor to the national AI Team, provided an accessible overview of what AI is in a practical sense, highlighting the differentiation between software and AI, she shared a jargon buster and AI vs traditional software comparison.
She explored the UK’s evolving regulatory environment, the NHS 10‑year plan, the government’s digital ambitions, and the unique challenges to governance and principles of responsible and safe AI adoption, including transparency, fairness, accountability and societal benefit.
Delegates heard two inspiring case studies demonstrating AI’s potential to reduce administrative burdens, free up staff time and improve outcomes
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital NHS FT
Victoria Furfie, Chief Clinical Information Officer - Community & Mental Health, shared how AI enabled tools are supporting clinical teams and improving care processes. She outlined key components of AI introduction strategy, workforce development, AL literacy, governance and ethics. Research showed 93% patients are comfortable with AI use but wanted a human in the loop. Positive outcomes include a decrease in waiting times and clinicians able to fucus more on patients.
Wigan Council
Leon Bergman, Director for Innovation and Finance showcased Wigan's ambitious, workforce‑led transformation programme—highlighting AI tools in adult social care such as virtual assistants, automated note‑taking, assessment support, case auditing and digital inclusion initiatives. Their learning emphasised the importance of culture, strong governance, co‑design and workforce engagement. Building digital skills across the workforce
Jo Stanford (CEO, HPCA) explored the human side of digital transformation, introducing Neuro‑Intelligent Change Delivery. Her session combined neuroscience, behavioural insights and change management to demonstrate how psychological safety, communication and habit‑building are central to successful AI adoption. Delegates were encouraged to consider how to design change in ways that support the brain’s natural responses and enhance readiness.
