Andy Maloney Blog: Insights from the 2024 NHS Staff Survey

Andy Maloney, Director of Delivery - Workforce, analyses the outcomes of the 2024 NHS staff survey and highlights several key concerns and observations, from staff challenges amidst NHS restructuring, increasing abuse and violence toward staff and generational differences in staff experience.

"Last week’s tumultuous announcements for the NHS largely overshadowed the annual publication of the NHS Staff Survey results (the largest staff survey globally). On the same day we were hearing about further major restructuring of leadership in the NHS we also learned more about how our NHS front line colleagues are feeling in the wake of rising demand on NHS services.

"It is rather worrying to see the continued increase in staff reporting being subjected to abuse and violence from patients and the public. This is eating into the resilience of colleagues providing essential services to the public and at a time when there is a risk that leadership focus will start to be diverted into working through further restructuring and reorganisation. Leaders understanding and attention on the real-life experience at the front line is crucial to enabling the ambition to significantly improve productivity across the NHS. Value, respect, and a safe and healthy working environment is inextricably linked to productivity and better outcomes for everyone.

"Earlier in February it was also interesting the read the Nuffield Trust analysis of survey data published up to 2023 that showed how the experience and motivations of clinicians is differing between age groups. Younger (Gen Z) NHS staff are now reporting lower job satisfaction and higher stress levels, ultimately impacting on retention and talent walking away from the NHS. Are we doing enough to understand how to meet the needs of our diverse NHS workforce and the impact of societal changes and can our leaders be empowered and better equipped to embrace these differing needs? I’m sure the answer is yes, and this must start with understanding the nuances of the survey results and stratifying them in a way that is meaningful and actionable.

"I know people professionals across the NHS will be working hard to engage all their staff in this conversation and finding time despite the complexity and uncertainty to use this valuable insight wisely."
