A significant component of the Board’s assurance and governance arrangements is the effective operation of its committees and in this context it is important to periodically take stock of current committee operation, its challenges in the future, and how those challenges might be addressed.
Whilst some committees have a defined role and are supported by guidance such as the Audit Committee Handbook, there is less clarity on the responsibilities of other, non-statutory, appointed committees e.g. with oversight of Quality, Finance and Performance etc.
NHS organisations need to ensure that the key elements of governance (financial, clinical, information) are in place and that there is an integrated approach to governance which avoids duplication and significant gaps in oversight.
Our latest MIAA Insight benchmarks the Terms of Reference and Workplans of Quality Committees across MIAA’s client base. Its aim is to support Board’s in reviewing the operation of their Quality Committee.
If you have any queries about this Insight or how MIAA can support your organisation please contact Sarah Dowbekin.
