MIAA's Anti-Fraud Investigation Team recently delivered webinars for HR professionals exploring the vital role of collaboration between HR and fraud specialists in protecting NHS resources and responding effectively to suspected fraud.
The sessions provided an overview of the work of MIAA's dedicated Investigation Team, refreshed participants' understanding of fraud, bribery and corruption, and highlighted current fraud trends affecting NHS organisations. Attendees also gained insight into the fraud investigation process, the importance of early reporting, and how HR teams can work alongside investigators while ensuring disciplinary and criminal investigations remain appropriately separate.
Using real case studies and successful prosecutions, the team demonstrated how fraud can occur in a variety of forms, including timesheet fraud, false qualifications, working whilst off sick, recruitment fraud and abuse of position. The session also shared the outcomes achieved by MIAA's Investigation Team, including financial recoveries, prosecutions, disciplinary action and referrals to professional regulators.
Key discussion points included information sharing between HR and anti-fraud specialists, emerging fraud risks across the NHS, reporting routes for concerns, and practical steps organisations can take to strengthen controls and align policies with best practice guidance from the NHS Counter Fraud Authority.
These webinars forms part of MIAA's ongoing commitment to supporting NHS organisations in preventing, detecting and responding to fraud, helping to safeguard valuable resources for patient care.
